Common questions
A little
clarity.
Prayer settings, Screen Time permission and notification permission each serve a different part of the app.
Why does Sutrah need Screen Time access?
Apple’s Family Controls framework lets Sutrah ask iOS to shield the apps and categories you select. Sutrah uses individual authorization for your own device. It does not use a Screen Time usage-report extension or receive a history of what you do in other apps. Read the privacy policy for details.
My chosen apps are not being held. What should I check?
- Open iPhone Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access and check Sutrah’s access.
- In Sutrah’s Focus tab, confirm that you selected apps in Apple’s picker and enabled the relevant prayer-time holds.
- Check that the Prayer tab has times for your saved city and that the current time falls inside an enabled hold.
- Reopen Sutrah after restarting your phone or changing your city so it can refresh its schedules.
If the issue continues, email the app and iOS versions, the prayer or session involved, and what appeared on screen.
How do I open a held app early?
Tap “Open Sutrah” on the shield. Outside strict sessions, you can read Quran for the duration set in Focus or complete the 100-count dhikr gate. A completed gate grants the timed break selected in Focus. The free version currently allows one completed early unlock per day; Pro removes that daily unlock limit. Apps also reopen when their hold ends.
What does strict mode do?
For a deep-focus session, strict mode turns off Sutrah’s early-end and Quran/dhikr unlock options until the session timer ends. Deep-focus choices are 15, 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. Screen Time permission remains controlled by iOS; strict mode is a commitment aid, not an irreversible device lock.
If you cannot access Sutrah and need to remove a shield, manage Sutrah’s permission in Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access.
Why are prayer times different from my mosque?
Calculation methods and local conventions can differ. In More → Prayer times & location, choose your mosque’s method, check the Standard or Hanafi Asr setting, and use per-prayer adjustments if needed. Sutrah calculates times from your saved coordinates. Follow your local mosque’s guidance when deciding which settings to use.
Do I need to update my location when I travel?
Yes. Sutrah saves a location when you ask it to use your location or look up a city; it does not continuously track your travels. Update the saved city or location after travelling, then check prayer times and refresh the app’s schedules. Typing a city uses Apple’s geocoding service and requires connectivity for the lookup.
I do not hear an adhan notification.
Check Settings → Notifications → Sutrah for notification and sound permission, and check which prayers are enabled in Sutrah’s adhan settings. iOS Focus modes, Do Not Disturb, sound settings and notification delivery settings can affect reminders. Add Sutrah to the allowed apps in an iOS Focus if appropriate. Open Sutrah regularly to refresh upcoming reminders.
Notifications depend on iOS permissions and scheduling. Do not rely on Sutrah as your only reminder for an essential event.
How does the Fajr alarm work on my iPhone?
Set the alarm time relative to Fajr, the days, sound, wake task and snooze in More → Fajr alarm. On supported iOS 26 devices, Sutrah uses Apple’s AlarmKit with separate alarm permission. On earlier iOS versions, it uses scheduled notifications, which follow iOS notification and sound settings.
The wake screen in Sutrah offers a dhikr or Ayat al-Kursi task. The Lock Screen uses a short sound clip; full playback happens inside the app. Check the next alarm shown in Sutrah and test your setup while awake.
What works without the internet?
The Quran’s Arabic text, transliteration and included translations are bundled for offline reading. Prayer calculations for a saved location, dhikr and local progress do not need a Sutrah account. Quran recitation streams from an external audio provider; city lookup, maps and nearby-place search use Apple services. Those features need an internet connection.
How do I change Quran text or recitation?
Open the reader’s text-options control, or More → Quran reading, to choose a translation, text size and reading appearance. The app includes eight translations with attribution. The reader’s audio controls let you choose a reciter. If audio cannot load, check your connection and try again; it is streamed rather than bundled.
The Qibla compass looks wrong.
Check the saved city or coordinates first, especially after travel. Use the compass away from magnets and magnetic cases, and follow any calibration guidance from your iPhone. The compass uses your phone’s heading; the map provides a second view of the calculated direction. Typing a city can set the calculation location without granting location access.
Does Sutrah automatically text my accountability partner?
No. When supported, Sutrah prepares a message in Apple’s Messages composer after you end a session early. You review it and tap Send yourself. Selecting a partner is a Pro feature. Automatic partner alerts are not currently part of Sutrah.
Where can I see Pro plans and restore a purchase?
Open More → Get Sutrah Pro to see the plans the App Store makes available to you, including current prices and any eligible trial. Use “Restore purchases” with the Apple Account that made the original purchase. An active subscription or lifetime entitlement unlocks Pro; a pending purchase needs Apple’s confirmation.
If restoring does not help, send us the exact message shown. Do not send your Apple Account password, verification codes or payment details.
How do I cancel a subscription or request a refund?
Open iPhone Settings → your name → Subscriptions → Sutrah to manage or cancel an App Store subscription. Apple advises cancelling a trial at least 24 hours before it ends if you do not want it to renew. A lifetime purchase is a one-time purchase, not a subscription to cancel.
Apple handles refund requests through reportaproblem.apple.com; approval is determined by Apple. See Apple’s cancellation instructions and our terms and billing information.
How do I delete my Sutrah data?
Sutrah has no app account to close. Its settings, selections and progress are stored locally in the app and its own extensions. Delete the app to remove its installed local data, and manage Screen Time access in iPhone Settings. Deleting the app does not cancel an App Store subscription or remove Apple’s purchase records. Read the privacy policy for information about external services and emails you choose to send.
